Eligible suppliers are herewith invited to indicate their interest in taking part in forthcoming UNICEF tenders for Complete stand alone Solar Powered Photovoltaic Refrigeration Systems. For this purpose, interested parties are invited to send their Expression of Interest (EOI) to UNICEF Supply Division.

UNICEF supports national immunization programs in several ways. One critical area is the Cold Chain and Logistics (CCL) system, as vaccines are biological products that must be kept within a narrow temperature range, usually 2-8 degrees Centigrade (36-45º F). The cold chain refers to the storage and transport equipment that enables vaccine to be kept at this temperature from the point of manufacture to the point of use in an immunization session or a clinic.

For the safe storage of vaccine in countries, UNICEF is amongst others providing Complete stand alone Solar Powered Photovoltaic Refrigeration Systems (‘Solar Refrigeration Systems’) being a key solution for countries with scarce or unreliable supply of other power sources for running refrigeration and freezing cabinets.

UNICEF foresees the issuance of tenders for Solar Refrigeration Systems to be forthcoming during the first quarter of 2011 with the goal to establish Long Term Arrangements for the supply to UNICEF program countries worldwide. In order to become eligible for procurement by UNICEF, Solar Refrigeration Systems must as a minimum requirement fulfill the standards and qualification outlined in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) PQS-System (‘Performance, Quality, Safety’).

Current specifications of items being procured by UNICEF can be found on the UNICEF online Catalogue at http://www.supply.unicef.dk/catalogue/ - under 'Immunization and Cold Chain'. However, UNICEF may also in future request other types of Solar Refrigeration Systems not currently listed therein (e.g. direct-drive solar refrigeration systems without use of batteries for power storage).

To express your interest in participating in UNICEF solicitations for Solar Refrigeration Systems, please contact Mr. Michael Blankemeyer, mblankemeyer@unicef.org, and submit your company and contact details. Please use the Contact Form and quote “EOI Solar Refrigeration Systems” as subject in your correspondence.

Please note the following importnant information:
1. Do not send your prices at this stage.
2. Do not send your products’ specifications at this stage.
3. Suppliers should assess whether they can provide a product that qualifies under WHO performance specifications for ‘Solar power systems for compression-cycle vaccine refrigerator or combined refrigerator-icepack freezer’, as outlined in Chapter E03 ‘Refrigerators and freezers for storing vaccines and freezing icepacks’.
4. Replying to this REOI cannot be considered as an automatic guarantee of receipt of solicitations in the future.
5. It is to be noted that UNICEF may prefer to contract with manufacturers rather than traders.
6. UNICEF reserves the right to change or cancel the requirement any time during the solicitation of the EOI.
7. UNICEF reserves the right to require compliance with additional terms and conditions.
8. Suppliers are also referred to the United Nations Global Marketplace (www.ungm.org) under which any company must successfully register in order to qualify for any contract awards with UNICEF.
