business impact of future Internet developments and addressing critical
issues such as the scale of the real opportunities, their barriers, impact
on the consumer, the key sectors and the European economy.
The study will be examining the role of a functioning high-speed broadband
infrastructure and emerging new types of services, which also might help
to foster the deployment of key enabling technologies. How the future
Internet can encourage ICT and e-business uptake and lead to new business
models needs to be evaluated and supported by empirical studies.
Finally, the study will assess what policy measures can help ensure the
transition towards the future Internet, formulate concrete proposals to
address the challenges and make recommendations for follow-up actions at
EU level.

SERVICES: This initiative is part of a continued series of actions under
the SBA action plan. The objective is to harmonise digital business
processes and data exchange architectures and standards at European and/or
international level, in aspecific industry and services sectors, as well
as at cross-sectoral level. The fundamental objective is to optimise
production and procurement processes in these sectors, in terms of
profitability, time to market, and reactivity. This is expected to help
SMEs to participate in global digital supply chains. 3 similar projects
have been launched already to support the textile and footwear, the
automotive industry and the transport and logistics sectors. All of those
are SME-intensive sectors of high economic importance for Europe, and very
likely to increase their competitiveness significantly through the
adoption and innovative use of ICT and e-business processes. Candidate
sectors for this initiative would be the agri-food, the construction, the
electronics, the financial services sectors, etc., to be decided jointly
by the Member States.

to address the issue and propose recommendations for follow-up actions at
EU level.
