Description The NSW Department of Industry and Investment, which trades as Industry & Investment NSW (“I&I NSW”), was formed on 1 July with the merger of several NSW Government departments and agencies, including the former Department of Primary Industries. I&I NSW acts in partnership with industry and other public sector organisations to foster profitable and sustainable development of primary industries in New South Wales. With more than 3000 staff based at over 130 locations across the state, I&I NSW delivers a wide range of services to primary industries and rural communities, with an emphasis on front-line services. The NSW Government, through I&I NSW, has invested significantly in shark research, in public education programs and also in the setting of mesh nets on ocean beaches between Wollongong and Newcastle in order to minimise the risk of beach swimmers encountering a shark. I&I NSW is seeking to identify companies interested in being involved in a trial of helicopter aerial surveillance for sharks.
The aim is to trial the use of helicopters to spot and report on the prevalence of sharks along the 51 beaches included in the Shark Meshing (Bather Protection) Program. This covers approximately 202 km of coastline between Newcastle and Wollongong. A secondary aim is to gather photographs of sharks and information on beach usage.
