IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY FOR ALBERTA’S INDUSTRIAL AND MANUFACTURING SECTORS

Alberta Environment, with its partners Alberta Finance and Enterprise, Calgary Economic Development, and Edmonton Economic Development Corporation are interested in identifying opportunities for improving energy efficiency within Alberta’s industrial and manufacturing sectors. The purpose of this project is to develop benchmarks for key sectors and offer pilot programs that will improve industrial energy efficiency in industrial small and medium enterprises.

In 2007, the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance developed a National Energy Efficiency Report Card on Government Activities. This report card rated Alberta as one of the poorest performing provinces in adopting and building energy efficiency awareness.

Most energy efficiency in industry is achieved through changes in how energy is managed in a facility, rather than through the installation of new technologies. The greatest impediment to energy efficiency is often a lack of education and understanding of the issues.

Energy Efficiency improvement is critical to the development of strong manufacturing companies in Alberta for a number of reasons:

- Cost savings that can be realized by increasing energy efficiency in operations;
- Increasing global competitiveness and expectations for green supply chains;
- Energy Efficiency improvement is a critical portion of running efficient operations;
- Increasing pressure to reduce GHG emissions through use of energy efficient technologies and manufacturing processes, and
- New regulatory regimes being brought forward by all levels of government.

Conserving and using energy efficiently is a major theme area in Alberta’s 2008 Climate Change Strategy. The Strategy commits the government to a list of energy efficiency actions and a target for energy efficiency and conservation of 24 megatonnes of greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2050.

The Improved Energy Efficiency for Alberta’s Industrial and Manufacturing Sectors (IEEIMS) Project will foster better energy use and conservation practices in Alberta’s industrial and manufacturing sectors.

Common challenges for companies in their Energy Efficiency (EE) work include knowing where to get information to begin and where to get help. The IEEIMS project will aim to:
- Identify key opportunities to increase industrial energy efficiency;
- Scope policy tools to benefit from those opportunities, and
- Provide better access to programs and services that will help Alberta’s industrial (and manufacturing) sectors improve their EE practices.
