In November 2008. The College appointed a contractor to complete the
design and carry out the works. The contractor was on site for five months
prior to going into administration. We are now seeking another contractor
to complete the works. Foundations are complete, as is piling for the
ground source heat pump. The concrete frame is up to 1st/2nd floor level.
No follow on sub contractors have started on site but the main sub
contract packages had been let before the contractor's demise. Information
regarding the sub contract packages will be included in the tender
information but tenderers will not be required to use those sub
contractors. Some construction issue information has been produced by the
novated design team and this will be included in the tender information.
Contractors will be asked to agree to the novation of the design team.
The new humanities building will be located at Mile End in East London. it
will be a 5 storey building of approx. 3 500 sq. m. the building is on a
tight inner city site fronting on to a busy main road. The building will
have no basement. plant will be located on the roof.
The building will provide a 300 seat fully equipped lecture theatre, a
fully equipped film and drama studio, several large and small seminar
rooms, a senior common room and 43 cellular offices and some open plan
office space for the Humanities department.
The structure will be concrete frame on pad foundations. because of the
proximity of underground railways there will be neoprene isolators between
foundations and structure to reduce vibration and noise in the building.
Offices will be naturally ventilated. teaching and associated spaces will
be air conditioned. a ground source heat pump will help to reduce the
carbon footprint of the building, providing winter heating and summer
cooling via chilled beams.
This iconic building by signature architects Wilkinson Eyre will provide a
state of the art, high specification, landmark addition to the
university's Mile End campus.
In order to ensure the quality of the building it is intended that the
design team will work up the drawings and specifications to detail design
(complete riba stage E). The contract will then be single stage tendered
using JCT with contractors design.
