Overall objectives
Energy Supply, Generation and Utilisation is one of the most important
Engineering issues today. It is well known that the world is facing an
Energy crisis due to the rapid depletion of the fossil fuels. Another
major problem is the inefficient use of energy which contributes to
pollution of cities, and climate change due to global warming.
Academic staff members of the Department of Industrial Electrical Power
Conversion of the Faculty of Engineering are specialised in the area of
design and control of power converters for energy conversion and
industrial applications. The area of engineering concerned with energy
generation and its efficient use is of utmost importance both for the
energy providers and even the end users (mainly industry). By means of the
specialised energy laboratory being proposed, an increasing number of
engineers and researchers can be trained in this area so as to provide
state-of-the-art knowledge in the implementation of energy generation from
conventional and RES, the design of novel power converter topologies and
how to apply energy efficient measures during energy conversion and use.
Only in this manner can the University keep abreast with worldwide
developments in this important area and generate highly skilled graduates
who are able to contribute to a knowledge-based economy driven by RTDi
activity as specified by Strategic Objective 1 of the NSRF.
Locally there is the need for a facility that will aid the training of
undergraduate and post-graduate engineering students and, boost the
research potential, in the area of Electrical Energy and Efficiency.
Further there is the need of a local RTD infrastructure run by qualified
personnel in the area of ‘Electrical Energy Conversion and Use’ which will
serve as a reference point both for industry and other institutions. This
laboratory can be used for studies, research and technical advice in the
area of electrical energy and efficiency from which governmental and
private institutions can benefit. The laboratory shall also be in a
position to offer guidance and training courses on energy efficient
measures (such as energy audits) concerning the heating, cooling, lighting
and control of electrical processes in industry. This will create new
links and strengthen the already existing links between the Department of
Industrial Electrical Power Conversion and local entities such as
Enemalta, MRA, Malta Enterprise, MEPA and other various local and foreign
industries.
The project aims to set up an electrical energy and efficiency laboratory
at the University’s Faculty of Engineering. The laboratory will be used
for teaching and research in the area of electrical energy generation
(especially from RES) and the efficient use of energy. The proposal fits
directly within P.A.1; ‘Enhancing Knowledge and Innovation’, and is a
smart investment in the knowledge infrastructure and research capacity at
the University in this important engineering field. The scope of the
laboratory is in line with the platform of strategic importance,
‘Environment and Energy’ as detailed in the National Strategic Plan for
Research and Innovation 2007-2010. The laboratory shall provide an
environment to enhance knowledge and innovation in the area of electrical
energy generation, conversion and its efficiency and quality. The project
shall contribute to increase Malta’s RTDi infrastructural capacity at
higher education. This is in agreement with the aims of P.A.1 which
focuses on the expansion and upgrading of R&D facilities in post-secondary
(vocational and tertiary) education institutions.
The activities that shall be undertaken in this laboratory shall aid to
entice and secure the potential of today’s and tomorrow’s youth to pursue
studies in the area of electrical energy, thus increasing the popularity
of S&T in the country.
II.1.5.2 - Specific objectives
This Facility will enhance knowledge quality by providing specialized
teaching and innovation and as a result will:
— contribute substantial improvements in the quality of knowledge transfer
to Tertiary level students following a range of degree and diploma
courses,
— enhance research opportunities of research with industry,
— attract more students to take up S&T disciplines and thus generate more
graduates with knowledge in Electrical Energy Engineering at both M.Phil
and PhD levels,
— enhance R&D facilities thus promoting the discovery of new knowledge and
resulting in an increase in refereed publications, new products/solutions
and thus patents,
— allow the knowledge transfer and application to the local industry thus
helping it to improve its R&D capacity, the skills of its working force &
consequently improve Malta’s innovation and competitive performance.
