6. Description of the contract: The aim of this project is to construct a
seawater desalination plant (and ancillary facilities, i.e. pumping
station and pipeline) in the Kümkoy/Sirianokhori area in the northern part
of Cyprus. The design capacity of the seawater desalination plant will be
24 112 m³ of drinking water per day through the conversion of seawater to
drinking water by the use of a series of treatment stages. These treatment
stages can be broken down into 5 distinct clarifications, namely
abstraction and screening, impurity removal, desalination, and
re-mineralisation and disinfection, and waste water treatment.
Seawater will be abstracted using a typical open seawater intake
structure. Abstracted water will gravitate to the seawater pump station.
Screened and chlorinated water will then be pumped approximately 2 500 m
to the desalination plant.
Following the abovementioned treatment stages the seawater will have been
treated to a level whereby it can be classified as water suitable for
human consumption, or drinking water (as defined by Drinking Water
Directive, Council Directive 98/83/EC along with other typical parameters
such as scaling potential and boron concentration). The process will
produce a liquid and solid by-product, the liquid stream will be returned
to the sea (following treatment) and the solid 'cake' will be removed from
site for disposal.
