ET-General Educ Quality Improv. (FY09) operates in Ethiopia.
The objective of the General Education Quality Improvement Program Project (GEQIP) for Ethiopia is to improve the quality of general education throughout the country. The Program will be monitored closely through a set of key performance indicators. The first phase of the GEQIP will also support the development of a robust monitoring and evaluation sub-component, and will assist the Ministry of Education (MOE) in further improving the existing education management information system (EMIS) capacity. There are five components to the project. The first component of the project is curriculum, textbooks and assessment. The main objectives of this component are to: (a) implement a new school curriculum; (b) provide textbooks and teacher guides developed for the new curriculum; and (c) align student assessment and examinations with the new curriculum and reform the inspection system. The second component of the project is Teacher Development Program (TDP). This component will support the Government's efforts to increase the supply of effective teacher educators, teachers and facilitators in primary and secondary education through the implementation of teacher education, and in-service and pre-service teacher development programs. The third component of the project is School Improvement Program (SIP). The objectives of the School Improvement Program (SIP) component are to: (i) improve the capacity of schools to prioritize needs and develop a school improvement plan; (ii) enhance school and community participation in resource utilization decisions and resource generation; (iii) improve the government's capacity to deliver specified amounts of schools grants at the woreda level; and (iv) improve the learning environment by providing basic operational resources to schools. The fourth component of the project is Management and Administration Program (MAP). This component supports the Government's initiatives to strengthen the planning, management, and monitoring capacity of MOE, Regional Education Bureau (REBs), and Woreda Education Office (WEOs) to implement system-wide primary and secondary education programs effectively and efficiently. The fifth and the final component of the project is program coordination and monitoring and evaluation. This component will provide the necessary resources for effective coordination and monitoring and evaluation, and the implementation of an information and communications strategy at the national and sub-national levels.
