Coastal Resource Management Project. Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources operates in Sri Lanka.
The Project will aim to minimize the potential adverse impacts of coastal erosion in critical coastal stretches through establishment of appropriate physical intervention intended to stabilize the coastline. Environmental degradation in selected lagoons, which support coastal fishing will be addressed through the Special Area Management (SAM) planning approach which has been pilot tested in Sri Lanka. The Project also aims at encouraging the sustained management and development of coastal fisheries resources by the implementation of activities intended to address issues i.e., overfishing in coastal waters, reduction in high percentage of fish wastage through improved handling, and lack of insfrastructure support facilities in specific locations. The Project will include enhancement of the institutional capabilities of concerned Government agencies and community organization in resource managements.
The objectives of the Project are to: (i) introduce physical interventions to address coastal erosion and establish a proactive coastal erosion management system; (ii) improve the sustainability of coastal resources and alleviate environmental degradation; (iii) prevent fisheries resource depletion in coastal waters; and (iv) strengthen MFARD, its key agencies, and local communities in resource management. The Project will comprise the following four components: (i) Coastline Stabilization; (ii) Coastal Environment and Resource Management; (iii) Fisheries Resource Management and Fish Quality Improvement, and the construction of harbors/anchorages and ancillary facilities for improvement of fish quality and reduction of pollution in lagoons; and (iv) Institutional Strengthening of MFARD, community organizations in coastal and fisheries resource management, and other concerned agencies
