The objective of this analytical work (AAA) is to provide the World Bank with a summary diagnostic report and an interventions option paper on the status of land degradation and on how best to implement and scale-up sustainable land management practices in Mali. In addition, it seeks to support the development of activities in Mali by the Bank that can contribute to deliver on the outcomes of Activity Line 3 (investments) of the TerrAfrica Business Planning Framework. It is also part of a broader effort to guide the development assistance dialogue with Mali, the lending and non-lending program, as well as the design and content of the next WB Country Assistance Strategy for Mali.
Specifically, the proposed work focuses on particularly degraded areas in Northern Mali to better a) understand the causes, consequences, costs and impact of land degradation as well as to b) determine how SLM practices could reverse the trend of land degradation; c) assess what type of SLM practices would lead to the highest level of benefits in terms of economic impacts, social impacts, ecosystem services and livelihood security. This analysis would therefore provide a rigorous analytical base upon which to improve decision-making at all levels, contribute to SLM mainstreaming and assist in SLM investment.
