energy performance it is essential that the thermal performance of new
building fabric components and constructs are well known. A large scale
guarded hot box calorimeter suitable for measuring accurately the thermal
performance of building façade elements of dimensions up to 2m by 2m is
required. The system should be able to measure the thermal performance of
plane single component facades and those incorporating multiple elements,
e.g. windows and doors.

TITLE: Anemometry Equipment for multiple point measurements
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: A system to enable the concurrent measurement of
air flow at multiple locations within a single zone or within multiple
zones of a building or a range of experimental test systems is required.
Airflow measurements in conjunction with temperature measurements will be
used in the analysis of convective heat transfer. Sufficient accuracy and
number of concurrent measurements are required to provide a data set
sufficient for validation of zonal and CFD computer models.

1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: Research into heat transfer and fluid flow is
ongoing that requires accurate determination of fluid viscosity over a
range of temperatures from below 0˚C to above 150˚C. In addition to
standard measurements using cone & plate, coaxial cylinder and vane tool
measuring systems the system should be suitable for measuring the effects
of modified surface finish and characteristics on apparent fluid viscosity
achieved by the deposition of thin super hydrophilic or super hydrophobic
films onto spare measuring elements.

TITLE: Large area solar simulator
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: A continuous solar simulator is required for the
evaluation of the performance and detailed characterization of
low-concentration C=1 to 3X solar thermal and photovoltaic systems. The
radiation characteristics in terms of spectral match, homogeneity over the
test plane and angular incidence distribution must be well known to allow
comparison with detailed simulation results. Provision of a cold sky
condition to prevent excessive IR radiation is essential. To allow
accurate collector characterization for a range of ambient conditions
radiation intensity should be both controlled and variable and a range of
wind velocities in the solar collector test plane should be provided.
Variation of the angle of inclination of the solar simulator from the
vertical to 60˚ to the vertical is desirable to allow the effective of
radiation incidence angle on solar collector performance to be evaluated.

TITLE: Optical Characterization
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: Research is being undertaken in the areas of solar
energy systems and advanced glazing that requires the optical
characterization (reflection and transmittance) of coated glasses (low-e,
solar control) and textured or selective surfaces (solar thermal or
photovoltaic). Equipment is required to measure the transmittance and
reflectance of materials within the wavelength range of at least 350 nm to
2 200 nm. In addition to small single component samples it is desirable to
be able to measure total transmission through multiple layered glazing
systems or systems that introduce significant levels of light scatter
during transmission.

TITLE: Data logging systems
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: A multi-channel data logging systems is required
for both laboratory and offsite experiments. The main parameters to be
measured include; temperatures, current, voltage, strain and solar
radiation intensity, compatibility of data logger with a wide range and
types of sensors to provide a high degree of flexibility is desirable. The
data logger will be used for experiments that range from long term
building thermal performance studies to systems with rapid transient
response times, for example solar radiation sensors. Robust standalone
logging is essential, a facility for remote data acquisition and
interrogation over the internet is advantageous.

1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: An outdoor test facility for solar thermal,
photovoltaic and building façade components is being established. A
weather station is required to provide general weather data which in
addition to solar radiation intensity and ambient temperature provides

should have a dedicated standalone data logging system that ideally will
be interrogated remotely.

TITLE: Fluid flow velocity profiling
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: Research is ongoing to measure fluid flows and
re-circulations in pipes and sensible and latent heat thermal energy
stores. The container materials may be metals, plastics or glass with or
without coatings that influence boundary layer development. In addition to
a wide range of fluids of various viscosities it is intended to measure
flow profiles in fluids that contain suspensions of micro capsules and if
possible within materials undergoing phase transition from solid to liquid
or liquid to solid. It is important that the measurement system is
non-intrusive and provides good resolution over a wide flow velocity range
with high accuracy and repeatability.

TITLE: Solar Radiation Characterisation
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: Facilities are being established for testing solar
thermal and photovoltaic collectors and building façade components. The
indoor solar test facility uses several different solar simulators and
provides carefully controlled conditions. The outdoor test site is used
for instantaneous and long term monitoring of solar thermal and
photovoltaic systems with concentrations in the range from C=1x to300x.
Accurate determination of the time varying radiation characteristics is
essential for the correct analysis of experimental measurements.

1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: Research is ongoing related to the detailed
characterization of the thermal performance of building envelopes and
building envelope components, thermal energy storage, heat transfer and
high concentration solar thermal and photovoltaic systems. A high
specification IR camera suitable for both characterization of large scale
building façades and small scale, total area of less than 40 by 40 mm is
required. High thermal sensitivity is essential for some applications,
e.g. vacuum glazing characterization, in which the pillar array, (pillar
diameter 0.2-0.4 mm) used to maintain separation of the glass sheets leads
to thermal surface effects with magnitudes of approximately 0.2˚ C.

TITLE: Advanced Glazing fabrication
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: Vacuum glazing allows windows with good visual
transmittance and very low rates of heat transfer to be developed. It is
intended to develop a range of double and triple vacuum glazing systems
using glass with coatings to provide tailored optical and thermal
performance. The system for edge sealing of prototype glazing should be
able to accommodate glazing of dimensions up to 1m by 1m, achieve a base
pressure of less than 5x 10-7 mbar, and provide uniform heat flux at the
periphery of the glazing to be sealed sufficient to achieve temperatures
of at least 220˚C.

TITLE: Evacuated Tube Solar Collectors
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: Forty nine percent of all energy used in the UK is
used to provide heat. Solar thermal energy is significantly under utilized
in the UK at the present time. Two medium sized, (30 tube) systems to
provide heat at temperatures of up to i) 75 and ii) 120˚C are required.
Detailed experimental characterization of commercially available standard
solar thermal systems performance will provide extensive data from which
to predict the utility of solar energy in the UK for heating and cooling
applications.

TITLE: Environmental monitoring of University of Birmingham buildings
1) SHORT DESCRIPTION: The University of Birmingham wishes to install a
complete functioning environmental monitoring system to establish the
performance and occupancy patterns of two buildings on the university
estate. This system will be linked to an external weather station in order
to determine specific factors influencing performance. Such a system will
provide the base data to enable the long term efficiency of building
strategies to be considered, particularly the impact of climate change
uncertainties on building performance.
