Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) has developed a new aqueous foam concentrate for use in mitigating blast overpressures from explosive devices. A patent application on this technology has been filed with the USPTO. The foam concentrate is intended to be introduced into a water stream at a concentration between 1.5-2%. This new aqueous blast mitigation foam concentrate has a proportionately smaller mass and volume than current 6% aqueous blast mitigation foam concentrate formulations, and is therefore significantly more portable. Consequently, the new aqueous blast mitigation foam concentrate is thicker and more viscous than 6% concentrate formulations but can still be educted using conventional foam generation equipment. Sandia is seeking partners to license this technology for use by emergency responders and/or military applications. The new 2% concentrate uses commercial-grade chemical ingredients and is expected to be cost competitive with the current 6% concentrates. The concentrate can also be blended using conventional equipment. Commercial licensees will have the option to obtain, up to and including, an exclusive license to the intellectual property in a pre-negotiated, defined field of use for reasonable compensation.
