Regulator was established as a corporate body under the Pensions Act 2004.
The Pensions Regulator will deliver a new system of private pension
regulation in the UK. The Pensions Regulator will, through its regulatory
actions:
Protect the benefits of members of work-based pension schemes.
Promote, and improve understanding of, good administration of work-based
pension schemes,
Reduce the risk of situations arising which may lead to compensation
payable from the Pensions Protection Fund.
The Pensions Regulator has been designated an executive non-departmental
public body (NDPB). It is an independent statutory body under the
stewardship of the Department for Work and Pensions. The Pensions
Regulator became fully operational on 6.4.2005.
The Chief Executive of the Pensions Regulator, as accounting officer, is
personally responsible for making suitable arrangements for the provision
of internal audit in a manner which represents best value for money. The
Pensions Regulator’s board and audit committee have a general
responsibility to ensure that proper internal audit arrangements are
established and maintained. These arrangements should accord with the
definition and standards set out in Government Internal Audit Standards
(HM Treasury, October 2001).
