Description: MUSEUM CONSERVATION CONSULTING SERVICES TO SURVEY CITY OF TORONTO MUSEUM COLLECTIONS STORAGE FACILITIES
The purpose of this RFP is to select a qualified museum conservator to assess and summarize existing storage capacities and conditions at City of Toronto Museums storage facilities. The Vendor shall determine if adequate facilities exist for the safe storage and preservation of the City’s museum collections. The studies will provide the basis for any future storage facility needs assessments. Information in these reports will help clarify storage needs and direct future capital improvement projects.

Scope of work:
ROLE OF THE VENDOR

The Vendor shall require full access to the collections storage facilities. Their survey and assessment of the buildings and collections requires an understanding of the heritage value placed on the collections. Every activity of the Vendor and their staff shall be undertaken in a manner that ensures the safety of the objects in the collection and will be consistent with the policies and standards of the City’s collections and conservation staff.

The Vendor shall provide collections management services which consist of a museum collections storage facility review. An architectural assessment of the existing storage buildings is also required. The Vendor shall engage the services of a licensed professional architect with a valid certificate of practice to perform this assessment.

The Vendor shall coordinate the results of the museums collections reviews with the architectural survey to produce a final report outlining the present storage conditions at the two sites and recommendations for change or improvement.


THE COLLECTIONS MANAGEMENT SURVEY

The museum collections facility survey shall consist of the following:

- Survey of the physical size and capacity of the present collections storage facilities located at 98 Atlantic Avenue and 329 Chaplin Crescent, Toronto

- Review of the collections stored at existing facilities at 98 Atlantic Avenue and 329 Chaplin Crescent

- Review of the environmental factors which are known to affect the preservation quality of the collections


ARCHITECTURAL ASSESSMENT OF THE EXISTING STORAGE FACILITIES

An architectural assessment of the storage buildings at 98 Atlantic Avenue and 329 Chaplin Crescent shall be necessary to determine if the existing buildings have the physical capacity to provide preservation quality collections storage. This building survey shall require the services of a professional architect.
