U.S. Army Natick Contracting Division, Kansas Street, Natick, MA on behalf of Natick Soldier System Center, Natick, MA intends to negotiate and award a purchase order under the Authority of FAR 13.5 on a sole source basis for an amount, not to exceed $90,000, of Silicone Carbide Ceramic Tiles. BAE is the only producer of the particular type of Slicon Carbide (SiC) required for portions of this effort. This ceramic material has been shown (as part of U.S. Army testing) to be substantially superior in performance to other SiC ceramics. Silicone carbide (SiC) tiles from numerous ceramic manufacturers have been investigated by the U.S. Army and other organizations for decades. None of those materials has demonstrated the ballistic impact performance of the subject SiC tiles. Nothing herein should be misconstrued as a request for proposal.
