is the only regularly breeding species in Ireland which occurs on the IUCN
Red List of Threatened Species, where it is classified as "Near
Threatened". It is a SPEC category 1 (European Species of Global Concern:
BirdLife International 2004) and is listed on Annex 1 of the EU Birds
Directive (70/409/EEC), Annex II of the Bonn Convention and Annex II of
the Berne Convention. In Ireland it is protected under the Wildlife Act
(1976) and Wildlife (Amendment) Act (2000) and is Red-listed in "Birds of
Conservation Concern in Ireland" (Newton et al. 1999, Lynas et al. 2007).
As such, it is regarded as high priority for conservation action in
Ireland.
