communis formations are communities in which juniper is a dominant or
significant constituent of the habitat. They are found on acidic and
calcareous heathland and calcareous grasslands from lowland to montane
levels. They mainly correspond to successions within mesophilous or
xerophilous nutrient-poor, calcareous grassland and sub-alpine heathlands
but may represent part of the climax vegetation of alpine heaths.
Information on the distribution and abundance of the formations is
imperfect and a formation is taken to vary from widely scattered plants to
dense stands. Juniper formations are concentrated towards the north and
west of the country.
