SECTION II: OBJECT OF THE CONTRACT
II.1) DESCRIPTION

Main site or location of works: A82 Pulpit Rock, 11km North of Tarbet,
Argyll & Bute.

II.1.4) Short description of the contract or purchase(s): The contract is
for the preliminary and detailed stages of a ground investigation along a
600m route length at Pulpit Rock on the A82, between Tarbet and
Crianlarich, alongside Loch Lomond. The investigation is to include site
works, laboratory testing and a factual report. It is anticipated that the
preliminary stage ground investigation will involve formation of 6-8 no.
rotary coreholes (depths ranging from 20m to 50m with downhole geophysical
surveys), 3 no. trial pits to 4.5m bgl, s, 2 no. horizontal coreholes
(into a retaining wall above and below the A82 road), 2-4 no boreholes in
Loch Lomond, a 600m length of geophysical survey along the road, a 400m
length of geophysical survey across the hillside, a geological scanline of
the rock outcrops across the site and installation/monitoring of
piezometers. Due to the topography and location of the site, access to
positions may require airlifts, crane lifts or formation of access tracks.
Scaffold working platforms to enable safe work on steep slopes may also be
required. Over water working is required (including rotary hole coring).
This work will be completed to the satisfaction of all statutory bodies
The works will require traffic management, road closure and nightshift
work. The results of the preliminary ground investigation will be used to
determine a preferred route option, after which the detailed ground
investigation will be specified. The detailed ground investigation works
will be dependant on the chosen option, but the Contractor could be
expected to undertake further ground investigation including over water
works, working adjacent to Network Rail property/land, rotary coring
(including down hole geophysical surveys, piezometers), horizontal coring,
(into Network Rail retaining wall), additional geophysical scanlines,
trial pits/hand dug pits and road cores. Access by airlift, crane lifts or
access tracks may be required as may work on steep slopes and scaffold
platforms. The works will require traffic management, road closure and
nightshift work. The Contractor shall be required to undertake laboratory
testing including soil and rock tests for classification, re-use
properties, strength, consolidation, effective and total stress, chemical
and contamination. The Contract includes for the preparation of a Factual
Report and an accompanying Digital Data Report for each stage of the
ground investigation (i.e. preliminary and detailed works). The contract
for the Services will include the following activities:- (a) construction
of all necessary works listed above (b) appropriate laboratory testing (c)
full reports enabling a detailed knowledge of the ground conditions along
the preferred route. The intention is that the Services are implemented by
a single contract using the ICE Conditions of Contract for Ground
Investigation 1st Edition. Specifications will include the standard
documents used by Transport Scotland for Ground Investigation contracts in
Scotland.
