II.1.4) Short description of the contract or purchase(s): For the past 30
to 40 years concern has been expressed about the declining numbers and
reduced range of several common and widespread bird species in Ireland.
While much of the earlier evidence was anecdotal, a comparison of the
first and second breeding bird atlas programmes of 1968-72 and 1988-91
showed that significant changes had occurred over that 20 year period
(Sharrock 1976, Gibbons et al 1993). Many of these changes were attributed
to agricultural intensification as a result of the Common Agricultural
Policy and were believed to be continuing. In more recent years birds have
been identified as good indicators of environmental change thus giving
emphasis on the need for reliable monitoring programmes for the common and
widespread species.
The Countryside Bird Survey is a response to this situation and was
launched as a partnership survey between NPWS, BirdWatch Ireland (BWI) and
the Heritage Council (HC) in 1998. It compliments the Breeding Bird Survey
that is carried out in Britain and Northern Ireland. Data gathered by CBS
may thus contribute to analyses on a wider geographical scale including
the production of indices of population change at the Ireland,
all-Ireland, Ireland and Britain, and European levels.
