II.1.4) Short description of the contract or purchase(s): The Department
of the Environment, Heritage & Local Government (DEHLG) is responsible for
the conservation of natural habitats and species and the protection of
biological diversity in Ireland. It is also responsible for providing
advice to Licensing Authorities in that regard.
Marine habitats requiring conservation and monitoring in Ireland under the
1992 EU Habitats Directive include inter alia the Annex I Habitat Large
shallow inlet & bay. This is a physiographic feature or habitat complex.
Apart from the resident soft bottom benthic communities, this habitat
complex also contains habitats/communities that are sensitive to
ecological change and make a very significant contribution to site
diversity. Indeed, the ecological value of many such habitats/communities
is generally recognised in their citing on the 2004 Initial OSPAR List of
Threatened and Declining Habitats and Species (i.e., Maërl beds, Seapen
and burrowing megafaunal communities, Zostera beds). The ecological
sensitivity of these habitats/communities to environmental change makes
them an ideal indicator of Annex I habitat quality. An assessment of their
extent and condition will facilitate and/or supplement the assessment and
future monitoring of the conservation status of the site as required by
the 1992 EU Habitats Directive.
