SERVICES: Exciting opportunity for innovative operator/developer.
Portsmouth City Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably
qualified and experienced organisations who are interested in entering
into a process aimed at securing the future refurbishment/development and
operation of the City’s Guildhall.
In the 1st stages we are seeking to shortlist a number of organisations to
participate in a soft market testing process in order to identify the
commercial opportunities that could be built into a long-term contract,
for example 25 years. Following this we will develop a final
brief/specification, which is likely to lead to a formal competitive
tender process where all providers should respond.
The Guildhall was originally opened in 1890 but was gutted by fire during
the Second World War and reduced to a mere shell. It was restored by E.
Barry Webber and reopened in 1959.
The Guildhall is situated in the heart of the City and is Portsmouth’s
most prestigious venue for a variety of uses including civic and mayoral
functions, popular and classical concerts, conferences, exhibitions,
sporting promotions, banquets and catering functions.
The main auditorium can seat 2020 for concerts and can host banquets of up
to 440 covers. The building also houses the Lord Mayor’s suite of rooms
and the Council Chamber together with a large number of meeting room's,
bar and catering areas and offices. The Guildhall requires extensive
maintenance work and modernisation and the City are seeking innovative
proposals on how the building can be refurbished and the role it should
play over the next 25 years.
